Typically, the court grants, denies or defers the petitions it receives. The multiple same-sex marriage cases, however, create a unique situation.</div>

And, in that case, why stop at threesomes?</div>

Every time a new state redefines marriage, the news is full of happy stories of gay and lesbian couples and their new families. But behind those big smiles and sunny photographs are other, more painful stories. These are left to secret, dark places. They are suppressed, and those who would tell them are silenced in the name of “marriage equality.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px solid rgb(225, 225, 225); line-height: 1.3; margin-bottom: 10px;">
But I refuse to be silent.</div>
<div style="border: 0px solid rgb(225, 225, 225); line-height: 1.3; margin-bottom: 10px;">
I represent one of those real-life stories that are kept in the shadows. I have personally felt the pain and devastation wrought by the propaganda that destroys natural families.</div>

Why should we stand for the family, or for marriage, or for life or for any of the culturally-conservative issues?</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
Living in California during the Proposition 8 debates, I had a front row seat watching the "elites" mangle the meaning of marriage. The judicial elites have handed down a disastrous series of federal court decisions, solidifying governmental commitment to the ideology of the sexual revolution. The entertainment elites seem to celebrate every family form except the natural family of a loving father and mother married faithfully to one another and raising their own children together. The media elites continue their shameless manipulation of public opinion. The economic elites pour money into political and propaganda campaigns designed to prop up the structure of the sexual revolution. Academic elites continue behind-the-scenes scribbling, advocating for recreating marriage, the family, and even the human body, in their own image.</div>

<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
In the face of all these cultural, legal and social headwinds, why should we stand for the family?</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
We should stand for the family precisely because the situation seems dire: we must build a record for posterity.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
Our responsibility at this time and in this place is to show future generations that the ordinary people of America do not want the dismantling of marriage. These policies were thrust upon us by the elites.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
We hear demands for "marriage equality." But we never hear about equality for children. Why do some children have a legally recognized right to the care and support of both of their parents, and other children do not?</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
We hear about adults and their desires to have children. Why don’t we ever hear about children and their desires to have their own biological parents?</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
We hear that children will be fine with any combination of adults, so long as they love each other and love the child.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
But isn’t this just an updated version of the old lies we were told about divorce? "Children will be fine as long as their parents are happy. After all, kids are resilient."</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
By separating sex from procreation and separating both from marriage, by claiming that men and women are completely interchangeable, the ideology of the sexual revolution has brought misery to millions of people.</div>
<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
"Gay marriage" really means removing the gender requirement from marriage. This will not be a single, stand-alone policy change. In other states, including California, the next moves have included:</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
• Replacing the words "husband and wife" with the gender-neutral "partner" or "spouse" in the law.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
• Replacing "mother" and "father" with generic "parent" in the law.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
• Changing birth certificates to reflect the wishes and intentions of adults rather than the actual genetic heritage of the child.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
• Children being assigned three legal parents.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
We do not want the systematic redefinition of parenthood.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
I am not optimistic about immediate success in any particular court or legislature. But I am optimistic about the long-run future of marriage.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
There is no future without marriage.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
We intend to stand for the family.</div>
<div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px;">
Will you stand with us?</div>

On September 18 at 7 p.m. supporters of man-woman marriage will gather at the Utah State Capitol for a public rally where they will listen to family experts from all over the country about preserving the definition of marriage. The purpose of the rally is to thank Attorney General Sean Reyes and Governor Gary Herbert for defending Utah’s definition of marriage and taking Utah’s case to the Supreme Court. Because Utah’s case is the furthest along in the legal process, Utah will be leading 31 other states who are desperately trying to maintain their definitions of marriage. All eyes are on Utah’s case to see if the Supreme Court will leave the question of marriage to the states.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #323335; font-family: 'Open Sans', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
With all of the money and time being spent on this issue, it makes sense to ask, “Why should Utahns even care about same-sex marriage?” Many still think that the answer to redefining marriage is that we should just “live and let live.” If you’re still carrying the “live and let live” banner, here are some people you should talk to:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #323335; font-family: 'Open Sans', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
Brendan Eich — one of the founders of the Mozilla Firefox Corporation was fired from his position as CEO because he donated $1,000 to preserving the definition of marriage in California. Don Mendell — a school counselor in Maine with a 36-year career who essentially lost his position and had to defend his license before a board because he said that he believed kids should have a mom and a dad. Dakota Ary — a grade school student who was suspended because he said he was uncomfortable with an explicit homosexual photograph posted in his classroom. And finally, David and Tanya Parker — parents of a kindergartner in Massachusetts who was taught about homosexuality in his kindergarten class. They were not given the choice to opt their son out of the instruction. These individuals can tell you what “live and let live” may look like for your family.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While anti-gender activists continue to push for the redefinition of marriage in the courts, they have already won a key victory: the redefinition of equality. The gay community has aggressively pursued and claimed equality for themselves. But why? In order to significantly advance their cause they needed to stake a claim on a universally appealing idea, apply that idea like a bumper sticker to their cause, and then let the appeal of the hijacked idea produce instant converts. “Equality” fits this formula perfectly, and it has worked like a charm.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px solid rgb(225, 225, 225); line-height: 1.3; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In case you have missed it, here are three recent examples of what the new “equality” looks like.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px solid rgb(225, 225, 225); line-height: 1.3; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Under the new equality, if you are working to publicize a major event in Utah about the importance of family and marriage and you apply for donated billboard space (like my organization did) you’re out of luck. We were told our advertising was potentially too “controversial” and therefore did not qualify for nonprofit donation status. The text for the billboard read: “Stand for the Family Conference. September 18 & 19.<a href="http://www.stand4family.org/" style="color: #648eac; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Stand4Family.org</a>. Tickets online.” This apparently controversial text disqualified the ad from consideration.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino;">A number of years ago I observed an elementary school class where the teacher used movement to help the children understand the power of peer pressure. The children were each given a piece of paper with a number on it. They were told to squat down and when the teacher beat her drum the number of times listed on the paper, the children were to pop up and make tall shapes with their bodies. All the children thought they had the same number, but in reality only a few of the children had the number that the teacher beat on her drum. When those few popped up they looked around confused and embarrassed and quickly squatted down again. The children had popped up at the right time, but none had the confidence or courage to stand there alone.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino;">I was amused at the time, but now I find myself in a similar situation. Just like those school children, I have been afraid to stand up publicly for something I know is right. The clear principles outlined in “The Family—A Proclamation to the World” should give me enough motivation to actively support the cause of marriage between one man and one woman. So, why have I been afraid to speak out? The reasons are complex, but I'm sure that many people share them.</span></div>

It took a brave southern judge, but the Left's perfect record on same-sex "marriage" rulings finally snapped. Earlier today, Judge Martin Feldman broke a string of 20-plus activist decisions and yielded to the democratic process on Louisiana's marriage amendment. After more than a year of constitutional contempt, Judge Feldman restored some semblance of credibility -- and sanity -- to a federal bench that had been rewriting marriage law since the Supreme Court's <em>Windsor</em> decision.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10px;">
Refusing to cave to the small -- but vocal chorus -- of liberals, <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/federal-judge-louisiana-upholds-state-gay-marriage-ban-article-1.1926364" style="color: #0088cc; text-decoration: none;">Feldman said</a> he was reluctant to throw away centuries of natural, social science, and legal tradition to satiate a radical fringe. "This Court is persuaded that Louisiana has a legitimate interest... whether obsolete in the opinion of some, or not, in the opinion of others," he wrote, "in linking children to an intact family formed by their two biological parents."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10px;">
Relying on research -- not the Left's misshapen idea of "rights" -- the Reagan appointee was blunt about the danger of chasing the political and cultural winds. "Public attitude might be becoming more diverse, but any right to same-sex marriage is not yet so entrenched as to be fundamental," he said plainly.<br />

state's refusal to recognize gay marriages legally performed<br />
in other states, ending an impressive streak of legal victories<br />

PROVO — <i>Disciples of Jesus Christ are defenders of marriage,</i> said Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during commencement exercises held in the Marriott Center at Brigham Young University on August 14.</div>

Perhaps there are times and places in the history of the world in which it is possible to go through life as just an ordinary, good person—a faithful spouse, a loving parent, a concerned citizen, a regular church-goer, an honest and industrious professional—leading a normal, quiet life, not making waves or standing out in any way. Perhaps. But the United States of America in the year 2014 is <em style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Crimson Text', Georgia, serif; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">not </em>one of those times and places. Rather, in our contemporary society, the only way to be good is to be <em style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Crimson Text', Georgia, serif; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">heroic</em>. Failing to act with heroism inevitably makes us complicit in grave evils.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
There has been a great deal of media attention focused on a pioneering new study of children with homosexual parents (defined as parents who had a same-sex romantic relationship while the child was under age 18). The first <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0049089X12000610" style="color: #0088cc; text-decoration: none;">article</a> based on the <a href="http://www.familystructurestudies.com/" style="color: #0088cc; text-decoration: none;">New Family Structures Study (NFSS)</a> was published by lead researcher Mark Regnerus in the journal <em>Social Science Research</em> in June 2012.<a href="http://www.frc.org/issuebrief/homosexual-parent-study-summary-of-findings#_edn1" name="_ednref1" style="color: #0088cc; text-decoration: none;" title=""></a>[1]</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
This study is the first to truly bridge the gap in our knowledge left by previous studies that have shown the benefits of being raised by a married mother and father (but which did not include direct comparisons with homosexual parents), and previous studies on homosexual parents (which, however, did not use large, representative samples).</div>

The results of this study were no surprise to pro-family researchers, but have been <a href="http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/revenge-sociologists_648829.html" style="color: #0088cc; text-decoration: none;">bitterly attacked</a> <a href="http://www.frc.org/issuebrief/homosexual-parent-study-summary-of-findings#_edn2" name="_ednref2" style="color: #0088cc; text-decoration: none;" title=""></a>[2] by pro-homosexual activists. As summarized on the NFSS website,</div>
<blockquote style="background-color: white; border-left-color: rgb(238, 238, 238); border-left-style: solid; border-left-width: 5px; font-family: 'Open Sans', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 15px;">
<div style="color: #336699; line-height: 1.25; padding: 0px 0px 15px;">
[T]he data show rather clearly that children raised by gay or lesbian parents on average are at a significant disadvantage when compared to children raised by the intact family of their married, biological mother and father.</div>

Centering on the young, and ranging from teen pregnancy to drugs and alcohol and from crime to violence and abuse, this curse produces poverty and isolation, bloats our welfare and justice systems, and imposes oppressive taxes to pay for ineffective, finger-in-the-dike government “solutions.”</span></span><br />
<div style="border: none; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 12pt; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Social problems are never adequately solved by social programs.</span></div>
<div style="border: none; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 12pt; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The burgeoning problems of today are a direct result of the deterioration of families. The vacuum created by disappearing families creates space for everything from gangs to excess government, which flourish within the hole the lack of family leaves behind. Our public and private sectors—from local officials and public education to big business and electronic media, the very groups which should be supporting, supplementing, and protecting families—instead seem to be trying either to substitute for them or to undermine them. Our newest, largest institutions, from giant corporations to information and entertainment industries, are creating misplaced loyalties and false paradigms that are destroying the oldest, smallest institution of family. And more and more parents, hot in pursuit of professional and financial success, can find neither the time nor the inclination to put family first.</span></div>
